Easter 2017

Easter Message:

Success or Significance.

Success is what happens to you,
Significance is what happens through you.

Jesus could have easily moved onto the religious scene of his time like no other religious figure, before or after him. He would have been the greatest evangelistic preacher known to man; just a personal invitation to follow Him and men dropped their nets and never looked back. His church would have been the fastest that growing church in the history of man. Who wouldn’t attend a church where the preacher taught messages like the Sermon on the Mount or the Beatitudes? Can you even begin to imaging how well attended his healing services would be. Bring the man a fish and not only would he feed the entire Church; he’d pull a gold coin out if it’s mouth for you. His books like, “The Purpose Driven Life” “Effective Prayer”, and “Inspiring Short Stories” would have been the most popular books of all time. His “Water into Wine” winery would have been the eighth wonder of the world. There is no doubt that Jesus could have turned the business end of the religion industry into the greatest success story ever! NO WAY could they ever have gotten away with crucifying the pastor of a popular World Wide church that was growing by thousands of member’s very week! The good news of Jesus Christ would have reached every corner of the known world.
But instead of the greatest success story known to man…. We have scriptures like this:
“ Matthew 16: Jesus[j] began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. “

On this special day when we come together to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, I pray; let us not lose track of God’s true calling upon the Saints before that blessed day when we stand beside Him in heaven.

Success is what happens to you,
Significance is what happens through you.

Jesus never accumulated riches on the earth. He died without any clothes, in hunger, thirst, shame and derision. Yet through these very cruelties, Jesus lived and died to make us rich. He purchased the citizenship of heaven for us through the forgiveness of our sins. He stepped aside that we might have His holy Spirit dewll within us. Without a doubt! Jesus is the epitome of significance. He was the most significant human being who ever lived on the planet. He is still the most significant person alive today!

I don’t for a moment want to imply that wealth and God’s good blessings are wrong, Scripture tells us that God gives us the power to make wealth, and that he delights in the prosperity of his servants (Psalm 35:27)—which includes material prosperity (Deuteronomy 28:11-13). So it is clear that wealth is not necessarily evil. What we must understand is that the blessings of God are just that, A GIFT FROM GOD! And to whom much is given, Much is expected. Out of our abundance, abundance must flow.

(Let us compare the models of Success as we understand them in the Western Civilizations, and the model of Significance as displayed by our Lord.)

Success: Requires constant dedication to the goal of achieving, (Often achieving “more”…
More from which to build upon: More than the others: More effort, more dedication, more resources, More, More, More.
Significance: Requires constant dedication to the focused goal of achieving. (Being Significant does not happen by accident. It’s an intentional effort to spend your own value, to add value to another person.)

Success: Requires Timing, (As in fast passed, high stress, in the moment reactions, and a disconnection to the impact on other people.)
Significance: Requires Time, (Time to build relationships, trust, understanding, compassion, Love and Mercy.) Jesus suffered every trial, and every struggle known to each of us and He relates to us in the midst of our needs.

Success: Requires “The Art of the Deal” mentality.
Significance: Requires the “Art of the Heart”; It requires that you lead with your humanity. Jesus was fully God, and fully man.

Success: Requires impacting large numbers of people either directly or indirectly.
Significance: Requires impacting one life at a time, individually and directly. Over and over we see Jesus dealing one on one with every kind of person.

Success: Requires the focus of your time, your resources, and your talent on the primary beneficiary: YOU!
Significance: Requires the focus of your time, your resources, and your talent on the primary beneficiary: Someone else!

Success: Is measured by your tangible value compared against other people’s success or failure.
Significance: Is measured directly by the positive impact upon other people’s lives.

Success: Is seldom ever fully satisfying, or satisfied with how much it has.
Significance: Fosters an unquenchable joy and satisfaction of the overflowing of the rivers of life and the flow of the Holy Spirit.

Success: Occupies your life.
Significance: Gives you Life.

Success: Is fleeting: Here today, gone tomorrow. Nothing we earn of the world, passes ever into the next.
Significance: Is an everlasting eternal reward that can never be burnt up in the judgment fires of our God..

Success: will cost you your resources, and if properly invested, will richly bless you here in life
As we see with Jesus:
Significance: will cost you your life and if properly invested, will richly bless you for all eternity.

So what does all of this have to do with Easter?

We came here this morning to celebrate the life and resurrection of our Lord Christ Jesus. He is Alive this morning, and he speaks us today just as he spoke to his disciples 2000 years ago:
“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. “

Easter 2016

An Easter message for the mountain mist.
Before we just jump right in, I want to encourage us to take a moment to wait upon the Holy Spirit. There is nothing I can say that would be more important for us to hear, than what the Holy Spirit has to say to us.
Holy Spirit, help us to turn our eyes upon Jesus.

If there is any day in the Christians life, Easter should be ALL ABOUT JESUS.

This week my wife and I spent most of our time for the whole week preparing for everything we had to do on Easter Sunday. We had the house to clean we had the meal to plan, we had Easter eggs to prepare, we had food to shop for and cook. So many things that really had nothing to do with Jesus. The sad thing is that we spent almost no time at all preparing our hearts for Jesus.

This morning I want us to become Eternity minded people.

I want you to look out on the horizon all the way over to the city of Boston. Now imagine $100 dollar bills, stacked on edge side by side all the way from where I’m standing into the heart of the city of Boston. Now I’m going to offer you two choices:
• In the first choice you can reach your hand down and grab as many of those $100 bills as you hand can hold in one hand. And every year for the next 30 – 40 years until you retire, you can keep coming back and grab another hand full and go off and do whatever you want with the money. During that time you probably could grab 10 – 15 feet of $100 dollar bills. But after you reach 65, you can’t come back. You’ve had a good life, you’ve had everything you wanted and needed. I’ve asked nothing of you, I’ve expected nothing from you.
• In the second choice you can do exactly the same thing every year, BUT! You work for me. You show up on time every day, you do what I ask, and you accomplish what we have to. You’ll have had a good life, you’ll have everything you wanted and needed. But at retirement age you get to have all the rest of the money. Who would pick the first choice? Sadly! Almost everybody. Even lots of Christians give up working for God. They lose the will to stick with Him. They never really have an eternity based vision of their life.

It’s time we begin to understand this life on earth is just a fleeting moment on the timeline of Eternity. God has offered us more than we can ever imagine, more than we can ever earn, more than we could ever deserve. But He wants us to work for Him. Not for the retirement plan, but for no other reason than the joy of our salvation.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind can comprehend, the plans I have for those who love me.”
——–
The Scripture tells us that on the third day, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James went to the tomb expecting to anoint Jesus’ body for burial. We all know today that they didn’t find what they were looking for.

They ended up having a personal, face to face encounter with the risen, living, Jesus!

I want us to understand the difference in their thinking between Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.

Before Jesus died on the cross,
Their focus was all about the here and now.
Their hope was in a salvation from their trials and persecution here on earth.
Their king was to be a literal king that would rule over Jerusalem and set the free from Roman rule.
Their love was to the man called Jesus.
Their lives were given to the life of Jesus as a son, as a friend, as a teacher.
There whole world was wrapped up in their own image of an earthly Jesus.

Even with all that the disciples had seen and heard; All the time they spent with Jesus, they were still thinking with earthly minds. When Jesus died on the cross, not only did their son, their friend, their prophet, their priest and their King die, their entire world died on that cross too!

But in the tomb, on Easter morning, the moment Jesus spoke the name “Mary” They knew that Jesus was alive. They instantly understood the true meaning of the life and words of Jesus.

Now their Hope and Salvation was an Eternal Salvation.

Now their King was the King of Heaven and on Earth forever and for always!

Now their Love was for the ever-living Son of God.

Now their lives were given to the Risen Savior who would never leave them or forsake them.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ turned the disciples into Eternity minded followers.

The problem with 21’st century American Christianity,,, is that the focus is back on the Here and Now! The true message and power of the resurrection is all but non-existent. Easter is just another day to overindulge ourselves in embarrassing riches.

We are desperately in need of hearing the Risen Savior call our name!

I’ve looked through all the messages I given on this mountaintop over the years and almost every Easter I ask the exact same thing!
Why did we come here this morning?
Who were we expecting to meet on top of this mountain this morning?
It’s not that I can’t think of anything else I have to say on Easter morning. It’s just that NOTHING EVER CHANGES!
Christians!
We’ve got to stop plodding through our lives day after day, doing the same old empty Christian actions. We’ve got to stop measuring our faith, based on how regular we attend church, weather we raise our hands when we sing, and how bold our name is monogrammed on our bibles.

We’ve got to start to Read God’s Word, and just start doing and living out what it says!
— Repent from Sin,
— Be Baptized in the Holy Spirit,
—- and Follow Jesus!

My fervent prayer for us this morning is that like Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James,,, that not one of us would leave this mountain top without having that same personal, life changing, face to face encounter with the risen, living, Jesus!

To be completely honest; Over the last few weeks, as I was working on this message the Holy Spirit began to convict me of this one thought;
IF I TRULY DID EXPECT TO MEET JESUS ON TOP OF THIS MOUTAIN THIS MORNING, WOULD I HAVE COME?
Would I dare to meet Him face to face at this very moment?
WOULD I DARE TO STAND BEFORE HIM PREPARED TO PRESENT MY LIFE TO HIM TODAY?

Over this last year; How much of my time has been His time?
How many of my words have been His words?
How much of my life has been His life?
WOULD I BE READY?
What IF the time was now?

Jesus says: “I was the one who was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. I hold the keys to death, hell, and the grave.” He is the one who decides who He lets in, and who He keeps out.

If there is anything we should take away about the Easter story, it is the message of Hope!
There IS a way to Glory.
There IS a way which leads to life!
Jesus says, I am the way, the truth and the life.
We have a choice! Choose LIFE! Choose Jesus!

I’ve never been and never will be an end times profit. Shouting, to the world; The end is near! But this morning I want to encourage each of us to boldly proclaim; The end IS near!
The end of apathy & carelessness with the heart of Jesus,
The end of spiritual laziness & weakness,
The end of helplessness & hopelessness,
The end of all of the excuses we make for all the things that separate us from getting closer to Jesus.
What do you need to put an end to in your life today that is getting between you and Jesus.

While we still have time! Brothers and Sisters in Christ this morning let me proclaim to anyone that has ears to hear the word of the Lord.
Now is the time to repent from all our excuses, and return to your first love!
– Remember from where you have fallen and return to your first works.
– Don’t let the things of this world distract you from falling madly in love with Him again.
– Don’t let the trials of these days darken the joy of your salvation!

This is the day that the Lord has made! We shall rejoice and be glad in it!

I thought I would like to end this morning’s message the way we should start every morning,,,, with Jesus….
The Bible says the if we cease to see his glory, if we become insensitive to his presence, if we refuse to worship Him through our lives,,,,,,, Even these rocks will praise Him.

Now is the time to be baptized in the Holy Spirit!

So many young Christian’s today struggle to call on the name of Jesus. I don’t mean, “say the name of Jesus”, I don’t mean use the name of Jesus. I mean call out to Him, by name; exactly as He calls us by our name.
This is going to be the hard part of this morning.
I want to invite us all just begin to call upon the Name of Jesus….
Let the power in the name of Jesus minister to our hearts….
Remember the many ways that Jesus has touched us personally….

There is power in the name of Jesus to create the heavens and the earth. (Through Him, and for Him all things are created.)

There is power to heal in the name of Jesus (Heal our bodies, Heal our minds.)

There is power to love in the name of Jesus (Love our God, Love ourselves, and Love our fellow man)

There is power to forgive in the name of Jesus (Forgive ourselves, and forgive others.)

There is power to live in the name of Jesus (To live a life that is a reflection of Him.)

How has the Power in the name of Jesus touched you? Testify to Him now.

There is power to save in the name of Jesus (Maybe there is someone here this morning that just isn’t sure where he or she stands this morning. Maybe now is the time to get back on track with Jesus this morning.

Silver and Gold have I none, but what I have I give to you! Rise up, and follow the Lord your God!

If we get that right, salvation takes care of itself.

*** May God Bless ***

Easter 2018

Easter Message:

I know that if you’re alive today, everybody has so many distractions and they can be so overwhelming that it’s hard to focus on any one thing for any length of time; especially your relationship with Jesus. It’s easy to loose track of the condition of our walk. It’s like:
– Kids ready for school? (Check!)
– Doctors appointment? (Pfth….)
– Kids Sports practice? (Check!)
– Laundry? (later.)
– Supper? (Mom! What are we having for supper? Can I have the frozen pizza?)
– Jesus? (I went to church last Sunday. Still saved.)
I’m good to go. Where’s my phone?

Nobody ever intentionally puts Jesus on the checklist, It just happens. (FYI, It’s doesn’t matter what age we are , we just have a different checklist.) So you better get used to asking yourself WHERE’S JESUS? Because it’s a life long process.
———————
Please accept my paraphrase of the Gospels, to construct a story format summary of the Easter morning story.
———————
Early on Sunday morning while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the Mother of James were bring the burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body. When they came to the tomb they found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. They entered the tomb and saw that Jesus was not there. Mary ran and found Simon Peter and John, and told them, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

Peter and John started running for the tomb. When John got to the tomb he looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there. Then Simon Peter and John went inside the tomb and seeing the linen wrappings lying in the tomb; they then believed, for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead.

Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying. “Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her.
“Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him.
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?”
She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.”

“Mary!” Jesus said.

She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!”
(which is Hebrew for “great teacher”, also “my beloved master”).

——————–

This morning I hope that the Holy Spirit will illuminate some truths of the heart, about the call, and the response, we find in the text of the gospels regarding the resurrection of Christ Jesus.
I am convinced that the critical difference between having having a Christian life and having a living, loving daily relationship with Jesus, is directly connected to degree we have had a real and personal encounter with the living Son of God.

I really don’t want to get into the “religion, versus relationship” argument regarding anyone’s state of salvation, or even question anyone’s sincerity towards their conviction to Christ Jesus. The difference I hope the Holy Spirit will illuminate to each of us this morning is very subtle, but it makes all the difference in the world!

As we can see from these versus, even though someone has spent substantial time with Jesus, sometimes we still don’t recognize Him in our lives. We are too focused on our own religious agenda (Reading the Bible, Praying, helping out at the church, and even our Sunday offering.) to see Him standing right in front of us. Unfortunately,,, lots of people go through their entire religious, even Christian lives without ever hearing Jesus call us personally by our name.

(If I really want to go to the heart of things,,, Sometimes people’s faith is based on Christ, Pre-Resurrection…)
– Jesus was born the Son of God, (Therefore he is a unique person worthy of being followed.)
– Jesus was a great teacher, (Therefore Jesus teachings are good guidance for a good life.)
– Jesus was a great man, (Therefore Jesus is a great roll model for my life.)
– Jesus is the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world. (Therefore I am saved.)

So many of us settle for: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” And this IS biblical,,, Unfortunately this results in the response; “I’m Saved.” This response has the Christian working for and waiting their entire lives for the moment they hear Jesus speak their name. They are waiting for the fullness of the Christ life to happen in an event that will occur in heaven after they die!

BUT! There IS SO MUCH MORE available to us. There is a deeper LIFE. There is a “Spirit Filled”, “Joy Unspeakable”, “Peace that passes all understanding” personal call, when you hear His voice call you by name! HERE AND NOW! And this real encounter with Him elicits a different personal response; “I’m Yours.” This response has the Christian walking in the fullness of the Christ life everyday of our lives. This IS biblical too! Jesus says: “For the Kingdom of God is within you.”

Let me make this simple analogy: If I were to be asked how I like being married, consider these two answers:
(1.) “I like sharing my life with someone, coming home and sharing my day, having someone that knows me and wants to be with me and grow old with me.” (This all sounds very good.)
or:
(2.) “I like being married to Simone.” The second answer would make all the difference to Simone.
Just like I believe the second scenario of the call and our response to Christ, (“I’m yours”) makes all the difference to Jesus.

“I’m Saved” is a very one sided response to Jesus’s call; the focus is on our-self.
“I’m yours.” is a very one sided response too, but the focus is on Jesus.

This morning, I want to encourage each of us to take this resurrection day to examine the real condition of our heart; Can there be more to my walk? (Not more work, more ministry, more religious activity…) I’ve already established that we’ve all got too many things on our plate; to many distractions from Jesus.
Are the Christian works of our life an easy, “I’m Saved” response?
Or do we dare put ourselves on the line and say to Jesus,,, “I’m yours.”?

Have we ever heard the voice of Jesus call us personally by our name? If so, how long ago has it been? Are we still walking in this real and personal call? AND even more,,, Does our life truly match up to the response; “I’m yours”?

I pray this morning that the Holy Spirit will open our eyes that we can see Jesus as Mary saw Jesus when He spoke her name. Open our ears that we can hear His call, that we would turn to Him and answer the call with, “My Beloved Master, I’m yours”.

This Easter,,, Find some time to tell Jesus, “I’m Yours”.

Psalm 63

Psalm 63 FYI! This Psalm used to be sung in the early church every day and is still sung every day in many monasteries throughout the world.

(Background: This is a psalm written by King David as he and his army was running from Saul. Saul and his army had sworn to Kill David and wipe out all of his followers. Day after Day, David picked up camp and ran for their lives to the next hiding place. Saul’s army was camped out in the valley just on the other side of the hill. If Saul knew that David was so close he could have had his army overwhelm David’s camp in just a few short hours. Add to that God had commanded David to go to fight the Philistines that were laying siege of an Israeli city. David knew that Saul would be able ambush them and they would probably not live out the day. David was at the end of his rope. He needed God more than ever.)

— You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you;

( This is King David getting real with God… He’s pulling out all the stops. This is David rolling out the scroll, David is reminding God of their covenant; “YOU God, are MY God”. ( The Davidic Covenant refers to God’s unconditional promises to David through Nathan the prophet; That Jesus would come from the line of David. ) David’s opening words foreshadow the words of Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane; “Father! Father.” …Always remember that we too have a covenant with God. Not like David’s covenant; Our covenant is a blood covenant signed by the blood of the lamb of God. God is legally bound to us through the sacrifice of His own son on the cross. Regardless of our circumstances, regardless of what or how we feel or even believe, God is legally bound to never leave us or forsake us. God’s covenant with us is unconditional and unbreakable! )

— I thirst for you,
— my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

(David is confessing to God his true position; his life is completely in God’s hands. He’s got nothing left to offer God. Nothing has brought him any relief; Not his money, his history, his strength, his intellect, his title, his army, not even his own faith has brought him any refreshment… “I need You and only You.”) God cannot be superseded by the things of the word. David the king may be desperate for God’s intervention in his situation,,, but David the soul-of-the-man is desperate for God’s presence. We cannot limit our perception of the outcome in our situation be the measure of God’s love for us.)

— I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

(This is David reminding God of their history together,,, This is not a sanctuary with four walls, this is the sanctuary of LIFE, walking side by side, God and David; as a young boy with God’s strength in him as he jumps on the back of a lion, to a young man crossing the stream together and stooping to pick up 5 shiny stones with the whole army of Israel cowering in fear. David knew that God would bring him victory over Israel’s enemy. David’s God was the God of the impossible. GOD IS NOT OFFENDED by the TRUTH! This is David confirming his faith in God to do the impossible in his life AGAIN.)

— Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.

— I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.

— I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

(David is testifying to God of his total and everlasting love and loyalty. God demands that we have no other Gods before Him. It can’t superficial faith; it can’t be routine; it can’t be ritual… That won’t due; You know it and God knows it and we had better get it right with God every day of our life because we can’t just turn this on the day we need it. David needed God, NOT JUST FOR THIS ISSUE, but for every day. David worshiped God with his obedience and with his praise. We can’t expect God to honor a lifetime of living a show of empty praise because we like the world to call us Christian.)

— On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.

(David has a history with God. It was real and it was relevant and God’s intervention in his life is his only hope. There is an old hymn that says: “Count your blessings, Name them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God has done.” David didn’t take God’s blessings for granted… He pondered them throughout the night; He was holding tight to their life-long relationship together. He had seen God continually working throughout his life. Now he was in the desert running for his life. David didn’t understand it then, but so many things in his life was a foreshadow of Jesus. None of us can say that we have the type of closeness to God that David did, but none of us ever expect to have a desert experience. )

— Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.

— I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.

(Again, David is confessing his dependence on God to be his strength. (You God are the reason I am the man that I am, and it is only by your strength that I have done the things that I have done.) Everything I do is under your shadow. Like a child, I cling to you for my life and like a loving parent, you hold me up.)

— Those who want to kill me will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth.

— They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals.

— But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God will glory in him,
while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

(David is finally telling God his need, his desire. Destroy my enemies and vindicate me before the nation of Israel. For those who conspire to kill me, scatter their bones across the desert in disgrace and humiliation. This is David’s confession of faith. Although David is still in the desert, he knows by faith that God will deliver him and restore him to his rightful place. WE are not David. The outcome of our trials are not up to us to define. The way God chooses to bring us through our trials, the way God chooses to restore us to Himself is totally in His hands. If God would not spare his own child from the cross to provide our salvation, what would God be willing to spare to hold us in his arms. Our ways are not His ways, Our thoughts are not His thoughts. So often a crisis of life becomes a crisis of Faith, because of our limitations to see God. The truth is, in this life, we can never completely see God.

“ It’s like this: when I was a child I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child does. But when I became a man my thoughts grew far beyond those of my childhood, and now I have put away the childish things. In the same way, we can see and understand only a little about God now, as if we were peering at his reflection in a poor mirror; but someday we are going to see him in his completeness, face-to-face. Now all that I know is hazy and blurred, but then I will see everything clearly, just as clearly as God sees into my heart right now. There are three things that remain—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. ”

Note: Everything written in my breakdown of Psalm 63 is based on feelings, thoughts and conversations with God in specific moments of my real life experiences. I have intentionally written these things with a layer of abstraction to express a universal application of the principles that apply here to everyone. I spent several days pondering how I was going to express these precepts without exposing the private moments and struggles of my life. For those of you that know me personally, I suspect that many of you can easily imagine the times and situations in my life that I was living through Psalm 63 moments. It is my hope that my unique interpretation of this Psalm might help someone find strength in this Psalm in those times when they too are going through a desert experience.

Gap Mountain

Gap Mountain, Troy NH.

This trail has become our Go-To hike for a perfect weekly trek, year round. This trail is a hard to beat with just the right effort for a solid morning of hiking without taking up the whole day. We can get from the Gap Mountain Road parking lot up and over to the Bellard Road parking lot, around the Michael Donovan loop (5.5miles) and back to car in just under 3 hours. This trail never disappoints, especially in the winter months. If lucky, you’ll be blessed by a spectacular visit from one of the Bard Owls that hang out along the south section of the trail.

This trail has definitely presented us with some of our most enjoyable hiking and snow shoeing adventures. As always,,, any good trail is made great by the company you share on the hike. Here’s some of that company now!

Did I happen to mention that this summit presents you with some of the best views of Mt. Monadnock. I’ve had my Royal Rangers out on this summit at night, and we could see flash lights of hikers on Monadnock. (I bring the Royal Rangers out on this trail several times a year.

South Gap.

There is a trail marked on the map leading from the summit of Middle to South Gap. Good luck finding it!. We’ve looked. A lot! We did eventually decide to bushwhack over to South Gap, (and see if we could find any blazes; we didn’t). We picked one of the nicest winter days of the year to snowshoe through deep powder snow just for the fun of breaking new trail. This is one of the rare places in New England where there is no under-brush and bushwhacking is an absolute dream. AND! Don’t let anyone tell you there are no views from South Gap. In the winter the views are fantastic. AND! The view of Middle Gap from that side of the mountain is amazing! Who knew! All in all the company and the hike made for a life long memory we will be trying to match for a long time to come.

This trail is made up of 5 easily hike-able short sections between 2 to 6 miles long. The “Friends of the Wapack Trail” have done a great job of reviving this trail. Within the last few years it has been exceptionally well blazed for winter, and casual hikers. You can join the “Friends” for an annual 21mile, one-day trek if you’re up for the challenge. There is a 95 page detailed trail guide & maps available; Wapack Trail Guide, by John E. Flanders, that is worth the investment, if you’re going to spend some time hiking the trail regularly. Here’s the skinny of the 5 sections: (from the Map included in the Wapack Trail Guide.)

(1.) Ma. 119 to Binney Hill Rd. 3.5Mi.
(2.) Binney Hill Rd. to NH 123-124 Crossing 5.6Mi.
(3.) NH 123-124 crossing to Nashua Rd. 2.2Mi. (Plus a 2Mi. Round trip leg to Kidder Mt.)
(4.) Nashua Rd. to NH 101 4.7Mi.
(5.) NH 101 to Old Mountain Rd. 5.4Mi.

Mt. Watatic    The 119 section around Mt. Watatic has a nice 3+ mile loop up the Wapack trail to Watatic summit, connecting to the Midstate trail, and back to the Rt. 119 parking lot. It’s a nice winter afternoon hike after church. It’s also a really cool trip for first time hikers, and kids. I bring a troop of 9, 10, & 11 year-olds out for this loop every year. Not part of the Wapack trail, but one of the most hiked trails up Mt. Watatic is an old trail under the old power lines, (no-longer there). This is a quick 1/2 mile rock scramble, straight up the side of Watatic. This trail is located 3/4 of a mile east of the Wapack trail on Rt. 119. There is obvious parking for 10+ cars, the trailhead is obvious, but not marked. index

Wapack Trail Trip report 12/31/00
Trail: Watatic power lines
Mountains: Watatic
Attendance: John & Simone
Distance: 2 miles total.
Weather: Sunny, 30’s, windy, and 14 inches of new powder

The last day of the year, and that’s more than enough excuse for a hike. Add to that 14inches of fresh powder, and a new pair of MSR’s Denali’s to try out, and there just wasn’t any way I’d be anywhere else. I wanted to give the new MSR’s a serious test, and the steep rock slide up the side of Watatic was just the place. They seemed to slip just a bit more than Simone’s Atlas’s, but not much more. I liked the way the MSR’s track, and they are much lighter, and easier to handle than my 36inch Tubbs. I don’t think I would have had the steam to make it to the top with my Tubbs, (even if they might have done a better job of it.) The summit had a couple of snow-mobiles leaving just as we got there, and the wind was a bit stiff, but it was nice as always to be there. No snowshoe would do well going down this trail, so we decided to bush whack, traversing the hillside; The MSR’s did this very well. (we found a dear bed on the hill side.) I noticed that with the extensions on, if I leaned back, I could do a controlled ski for a few feet of the steep sections. (like glissading). We hitched back up with the Power lines trail just at the tail-end of the steep section, and the MSR’s did as well as Simone’s Atlas’s. Then I did the neatest thing, I took off the extensions as soon as they weren’t needed. Just the idea of not having any unnecessary weight on my feet is cool! index

Sharon ClifsOne of my most pleasant winter hikes was during a 1998 snowstorm, hiking the stretch between Nashua Rd. and NH 101. The Sharon Cliffs stretch. Visibility was just a few hundred feet. We didn’t hike through, but turned around at Holt peak. A fresh coat to new falling power was silently covering our tracks within minutes of our passing, and by the time we turned back from Holt point, our tracks were totally gone. Normally this might have been a scary situation, but not on the Wapack. We felt safe, and at peace. Three inches of fresh snow had fallen in less than three hours. We’ve done this stretch other times, and it is just as pleasant every time, rain, sun, or snow. Without giving too much away, there is a must see, modern day stone-henge between the Nashua Rd. and Rt. 101 leg of the trail. You’ll love it………… We’ve hiked this with another couple, spotting cars on each end. A fantastic winter hike with great views from numerous clearings along the ridge. The trail crosses the summit of the Temple Mountain Ski area, and on a busy ski day you have to share the slopes with the skiers. The people at Temple are the best. After the hike, stop in at the lodge and buy some hot food. index

Wapack Trail Trip report 01/01/01
Trail: Sharon Clifs
Mountains:
Attendance: John, Simone & Gabe
Distance: 3 miles total.
Weather: Sunny, 30’s, and 14 inches of new powder

What a great day for snowshoeing. The trail had been packed in by a few hikers before we got there. We didn’t mind, because we weren’t planning to spend much time on the trail, and we didn’t. As soon as we reached the cliffs we branched off on a wonderful bush whack all along the length of the cliffs. We followed the tracks of what we believe was a quite adventurous fox. His tracks travelled as close to the ledges as possible for man or beast. At some points, even standing out over the cliffs to search the valley below. He marked his territory all along the edges of the Sharon cliffs, cool territory! This was my second snow shoe trip on the new MSR Denali’s. I like em! Nice and light! Even with the extensions on. I love the feature of removing the extensions when ever they aren’t needed. This is worth it’s weight in gold for me. My 36″ Tubbs may be a superior product, but I just haven’t got the strength or stamina to handle steep, and long stretches of breaking trail in them. With the MSR’s I’m more than willing to give up on some quality, for the weight difference. I’ll do far more with the MSR’s than I would ever with the Tubbs, if only because I’ll be wearing them more because the experience is so much more fun with the MSR’s.

Pratt Mountain    Binny Hill Road to Pratt Mountain, (1817ft.) Saturday, January 28, 2000 12:00.

Simone and I hit the trail a bit late, but we were only expecting a short afternoon snowshoe trip up Pratt. The dirt section of Binny Hill road after the last house is not plowed in the winter, so we had to hike a 1/2 mile to where the Wapack trail branches right into the woods towards Pratt Mountain. The road was easy hiking because it’s very well traveled by snowmobiles and 4 Wheel drive vehicles. Most of this section of the Wapack presents very little elevation gain, but once you reach the base of Pratt the 800ft of elevation is covered in a 1/4 mile. The hiking is typical Wapack woods trails, past swamps, and beautiful woodlots. On this day we just happened to be the first to break trail up Pratt. The snow was pure powder averaging 12in. through out, with drifts up to twice that. There is something to be said for breaking virgin snow to a summit, even if it’s only 1817ft. The sky was memorably deep blue, and the views east to Boston, and west to Mt. Mondanock were wonderful. This was our first time out this season on the snowshoes. The four-mile round trip was about all we could have done for our first hike out. We met a tele mark skier hiking up the steep sections of Pratt that we had just blazed, and another snowshoe hiker just a few hundred feet from the trailhead. We got back to the car at 4:00, it was a welcome site. Our legs were beat. Our trip on this day was about 4 miles round trip, but in the summer if you drive up Binny Hill road to the Wapack Trail this will cut the round trip down to 3 miles.

South and North Pack Monadnocks

Another highly recommended hike is the stretch between Miller State Park NH101, over South and North Pack Monadnock to Old Mountain Rd. If you can’t spot a car, a hike from Miller State Park, to North Pack, and back is a nice 6+mile trip. Or from Old Mountain Rd. to South Pack (6+miles). If your looking for a quick jump, just doing the stretch from Old Mountain Rd. to North Pack (3-mile round trip) won’t eat up more than 2.5 hrs. An added bonus to these hikes are their proximity to the Peterborough EMS headquarters. The hikes are short enough to leave time for a quick check in the returns/closeout room.

At the Rt. 123/124 crossing is The Windblown Cross-Country Ski Area that is shares part of the Watatic Trail. There is a cabin in this section that I understand can be rented for a modest fee. It might be worth checking into for small group winter camping. It sounds like a great place to take a scouting troop.

Notice how many pictures have lunchtime in them. ….1/2 of Dawn and Scott, or,… “I can’t believe I can look so good after having just fallen on my butt!”
Ipswitch Mtn. Wapack Trail Trip report 8/22/00
Trail: Rt124 (by Windblown X-country ski area) south, to Pratt Mtn.
Mountains: Barrett, Ipswhich, Rocky Top ledges, Pratt.
Attendance: John & Simone.
Distance: 5.8 miles each way 11.6-miles total.
Weather: Hot (85’ish) dry, and sunny. The trailhead is about 100yards east of the Windblown Ski area, on a posted private drive called “Watatic Rd.” The sign to the trailhead is about 100 ft. off of Rt.124. There is a wide shoulder to park on, (don’t park on Watatic Rd.). The trail starts out as part of the Windblown Ski area trails. At times the many intersections of X-country ski and snowshoe trails make it confusing as to which trail to follow, but to the credit of “Friends of the Wapack” they have taken much care to keep you on trail; there are plenty of signs and blazes. In that section, if you don’t see a blaze every few moments, you may be off the trail. For that matter, the Wapack Trail is one of the best blazed trails I’ve hiked. Within the first 15 minutes you hike up to a view spot that lets you check out the entire ridge to Pratt Mtn., and a nice preview of the views available all along the hike. We had sun and dappled shade on our woods hike, and enjoyed the lush green fern covered forest floor along the trailsides.index

Barrett Mtn. is the first “big hill” to summit. The top is wooded, and is the ramp up to the ridge you’ll be on for the rest of the day’s hike. There is a spring along the side of Barrett that was the only source of water. (I have no idea how reliable this spring is). This proved to be critical for us because we weren’t expecting the high temps, and we only packed a liter &1/2. We began to ration fluid on the return leg of the trail, knowing we wouldn’t find water until we got back to this point. By the time we did replenish our water, we were definitely in need. From he summit of Barrett, the trail does a lot of ups, and downs through a wide forest path, until it reaches the summit of Ipswhich Mtn. The path was wide enough for an ATV to travel. (We saw ATV tracks.) The trail map lists a lower and higher peak of Ipswhich.

The trail from Ipswhich to Pratt begins to be less traveled, but is the best section of the ridge. It too has a lot of ups and downs, but at most of the ups, you’ll find nice open ledges and lots of spectacular views of Mount Monadnock. The trail follows a peak of ledges called Rocky Top, just before you reach Pratt Mtn. Pratt is a fun peak that makes a great winter hike from Binny Hill road. We spent a well-deserved nap in a thick patch grass under the shade of pine tree. index

ducks

A few years ago on a spectacular spring morning, I had the marvelous blessing of watching right up close, (So close I could actually see what I could only describe as a mothers pride on her face.) a mother duck, with a large brood of little baby ducklings following behind her one by one, all in a line.

She was absolutely beautiful with the morning sun illuminating the iridescent colors of her feathers, so perfectly aligned on her body. She walked with absolute determination with her head held way up high looking steadfast at her goal, with her whole brood of billowy down covered chicks marching in a line right behind her. Each chick in its place one after the other with a discipline and loyalty to their mother’s will like few human parents will ever experience.

The wonder of God’s unlimited capacity and creative imagination was on full display this morning and I could only but marvel at the one who could ever have conceived of such beauty. In retrospect, every attempt of human creativity in all of the arts is only a reflection; someone’s interpretation of what God has already created. No sound in music that God hasn’t already created in nature somewhere, no color on the painter’s pallet that God hasn’t used in his own creative expression.

As spectacular as this sight of innocence in nature and beauty was; No matter what pleasure and joy of what I was seeing with my own eyes there might have been, should have been; there was one overriding overwhelming set of emotions of PANIC, Desperation and Anguish. It wasn’t about the Duck and ducklings in and of themselves; they were beautiful. It was about where they were.

On this wonderful morning of this spectacular day I was exactly where I am most every morning at 7:00AM. In my car, speeding down the highway on my way to my place of employment, with my mind self consumed with the prospective drudgeries of the day.

Cresting over a hill around a corner, my heart skipped a beat; I tapped the break, swerved hard and fast into the left lane and just managed to maneuver my car from running full speed into the family of ducks. As I sped by I flashed the headlights and laid full into the car horn hoping to scare the mother and ducklings into running back to safety on the side of the road. No chance… She was completely un-daunted from her quest to get her brood across the highway. I quickly glanced into my rear-view mirror only to see what I knew I would see. Just seconds behind me were two full lanes of cars bearing down on what was an inevitable fate for that poor creature and her little ducklings.

In just one instant, all that innocence, all that beauty, all that revelation of the wonder of the creative hand of God; tragically and terribly gone.

I didn’t look; I didn’t want to look. I didn’t want to know. If I didn’t see it happen, maybe I could tell myself it didn’t happen. I willed myself to believe that somehow they all escaped their unimaginable fate. To this day, through years long past it still effects me as though it just happened seconds ago.

It strikes me that I can be so troubled, so disturbed so pierced to the core of my heart even to tears, all these years later, about this inevitable fate of this innocent wild creature and all her ducklings.

But what disturbs and troubles me far more than the depth of my compassion and sensitivity for these innocent creatures is my lack of the same intensity of compassion and caring towards many of my fellow men.

It’s not that I am uncaring, or insensitive… I am compassionate. I am sensitive. I am caring. At least I try to be. I definitely do have areas of more intense emotional commitment and involvement towards certain demographics. My heart does go out to the specific struggles of children and young adults as they face the trials and struggles of life; but whose doesn’t? I do try to put my life in deeds and effort to do something, to have my feelings and words be more than just a clanging gong and clashing symbol.

But I must confess,,, there could be more.

Moreover,,, I am shocked at the degree of de-sensitizing that has occurred in my heart at the pain and suffering of the many people that cross the pages and airwaves of our news media. Each day the radio and TV bombard our lives with the tragedies and suffering of so many people in my community and around the world.

The world today is madness, and there doesn’t seem to be a voice of reason that can rise above to sounds of insanity. I really do fret about the kind of world my children and grandchildren are going to be living in. There is far more evidence of social, moral and spiritual devolution, than there is of a rising tide of civil evolution.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

How pitiful the tally of those I have managed to bring into the fold. Oh for the joy to look back at the last 40 years of my own Christianity and levy a count of at least one saved soul per year. How empty and disappointing will the words echo in my ears…. “Well done my good and faithful servant. YOU made it.”

.

.

. We have to do more. Even now, in writing this message, Its not enough for me just to flash the headlights lights, and lean full on the horn to try to cause my fellow man to turn back from the path of inevitable eternal destruction. We have to care enough to be moved into action. We don’t have to try to save the world; but we should try to disciple at least a few each.

“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.””

My friends, I am truly afraid that this may be the last harvest of the season,

Ask the Lord of the harvest,

Send me.

Make a Difference

Make a difference.

A few years back after one of the major hurricanes had come up the northeast coast wreaking havoc all across the eastern seaboard. The day after the hurricane had passed; a father had brought his son to the beach to see that the danger had passed and that the sun was shining once again. That morning as two of them had crested the top of the dunes and looked out towards the ocean, they came across a sight that neither of them had expected to see. The storm had washed millions of fish up onto the shore. As far as they could see in either direction, there were dead and dying fish covering every inch of the beach. As the two of them walked past the fish to the edge of the water, the young boy picked up one of the fish that was gasping for air and tossed it back into the sea.    The father looked at his son and tried to console him a little:  There’s just too many of them, and if they’re not already dead, they will be very soon. We can’t possibly make a difference… The boy waited for a moment and then responded to his father. I made a difference to that fish. Author unknown, As told to me by James Prescott

The scripture tells us that we will always have trials, there will always be insurmountable problems, but it also shows compassion so strong that it was willing to die for its cause. We are that cause. Jesus had every right to give up on us. Not one, not even his closest disciples stood by him. The sin in this world IS insurmountable. The pain and suffering, the senselessness of the hate and cruelty that people have towards each other is overwhelming and if you or any one of us glanced even for a second with an open heart at the depth and truth of the evil that surrounds us, it would flood us with unbearable hopelessness.

But we are not hopeless, and we are not helpless to make a difference.

Jesus gave us the model for discipleship: take a very small group of loyal friends, invite them into your life for several years, teach them continuously, and then let them go to repeat the process with their own disciples.

I didn’t grow up as a Christian. I didn’t become a Christian until my mid 20’s. If there was even one person that tried to reach out to me in my teen-years, I can’t remember one. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t wonder what might have been in my life if someone, just anyone, reached out to me to direct my path at that time. It wasn’t until my early 20’s that I came in contact of a few people that reached out to help guide me along the right path. I credit those people for nudging my life from where I was destined, to where I ended up.

Almost all of those people were Christians, but very few of them attempted to persuade me that I should become a Christian too. In most cases I learned of their personal faith, after their greatest impact upon my life was over. But! I am absolutely certain, that every one of these people reached out to me and impacted my life by intent! And through them, God was nudging me “Inch by inch” into a place where I would be more receptive to His presence in His interceders. Eventually He brought me into the path of people who would actively disciple me to be a follower of Christ. But first, He sent those to till the fallow ground.

As I look back through my life and examine the difference makers in my life, they really didn’t do all that much; some only invested just few well-connected hours; very few invested more than 20 hours. But, cumulatively it was enough to make all the difference in the world to me.

For 35 years in ministry, I have dedicated myself to making a difference to young people, one or two disciples at a time, for as long as our paths intersected. (I seem to relate most to the age in a person’s life where they are most vulnerable, and least reached.) If I have any regrets in my life, it is that over all these years there have only been a very small handful of people that I have been able to reach out to in a meaningful discipleship roll.

Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples in all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and then teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you; and be sure of this—that I am with you always, even to the end of the world.”

In regard to discipleship I often fear that all we like sheep have gone astray, we have left the example of Christ and follow our own paths.

We mistake evangelism for discipleship. We focus on the noun, not the verb. (Interesting note: Disciple doesn’t even show up in the English dictionary as a verb.)

For me the process of discipleship to young people is a selfish one. It is only within the context of investing my self into nudging someone onto the right path, shining a dimly lit light towards my Lord and Savior, that I experience the second premise of Matthew 28:19-20… Be sure of this – that I am with you always, even to the end of the world.

I wish I were a better Christian; More anchored, More disciplined (No pun intended); Able to sustain my faith without it’s connection to the ministry of discipleship to kids that often don’t even seem to care or notice. But, like a light switch on a wall turns on and off a light, so is the depth of my walk associated to depth of my ministry. But I am desperately driven to make a difference. And I can’t understand, those who are not.

Be a difference maker by intent.

It really doesn’t take all that much effort.

Nudge someone a little bit closer to the right path.

Make a difference, one person at a time.

Clipping in

Clipping in.

Last week we began learning about the basics of rock climbing:

Knowing the basics, for each and every one of us is absolutely critical, (A matter of Life and Death actually.).

Before you ever let someone/anyone talk you into climbing up, or rappelling down the side of a sheer rock face wall, you had better know for yourself that everything is set right. People get hurt, or even worse, when they don’t know what they are doing, and they trust that someone else hasn’t made any mistakes.

This week I am giving each of you a carabineer. It’s NOT a climbing carabineer! It’s only useful for clipping in some extra gear onto your school book bag. But it’s more than enough to remind you about your response to this message tonight.

The first personal investment in any climb or repel is CLIPPING IN. That is the moment you begin to be 100% invested in the activity. For that exact reason, “On Belay” is the first voice command a person ready to climb, or repel, announces to his support personnel. It’s announcing to the world “I’m on deck! This is it! I’m committing to this!” The second you “Clip in.” to the rope and begin the process of backing off and over the ledge, you are putting your total faith in the support system. You are putting your faith in: (You’re putting your life in the hands of.) the harness, the rigging, the rope, and your belayer. Your support person will reply; “Belay on!”. Only after a person has completed the process of clipping in, and has completely double-checked all his safety checks, he then calls out “Climbing!”, and waits for the reply, “Climb on!”.

Tonight I want to invite each of you to “Clip In”.

Before each of you takes one of these carabineers I want you think about your commitment to being a Christian. Have you really “Clipped in”? Have you made the same commitment with your life to Jesus, as someone does with their equipment when they risk everything on a climb?

Tonight I’m going to make things very easy; simply by speaking out the phrase, “On Belay”.

If you can remember a specific moment in time when you accepted Christ in your life, and you are absolutely certain that you have made the life changing commitment to trust your life to Him. Then I want you to think of this as just another safety check. Make sure you are securely tied in to Jesus through a real relationship with Him. Re-dedicate yourself to read your bible; (even just a few minutes a day.). Is your prayer life as solid as it should be? Are you sharing your daily life with Him through an awareness of the Holy Spirit guiding your thoughts and actions? And most importantly, is the relationship two directional? Do you believe in your spirit that you have heard the call back from Jesus, “Belay on!”. As you pick up your carabineer, confirm your commitment tonight by calling out, “On Belay”.

If you are sure of a personal strong solid faith in Jesus Christ, and you really want to step up your relationship with Jesus. If you are looking for something in your life that puts your religion into relationship and your relationship into actions; you want to be an active part in the work and ministry of Christ… Then by all means,,, go ahead and call out to Him, “Climbing!”

If you aren’t sure where you stand with your commitment with Jesus, I want to give you an opportunity tonight to make that first step. If you want to put your trust in Him to help you with the rest of your life; If you want to know the freedom of being completely forgiven of all your sins; If you want a new purpose, a new reason, and put a new captain in charge of your life; Tonight as you take your carabineer, call out to Him, “On Belay”.

Tonight, if you’re simply unsure. You don’t know where you stand; you’re not sure if you’re ready to accept Christ in your life. You don’t even know for sure what that means… Please! Feel free to take one of these carabineers as a commitment to your self, that you are willing to keep an open mind. Take one of these carabineers to remind yourself that you are open to the possibilities that Christ could make in your life. Take one of these carabineers to at least make the commitment to yourself that you have not completely closed the door to Jesus.

My prayer for each of you tonight is that you will use this carabineer often, and that the Holy Spirit will remind you of your personal response to this invitation tonight.

*** May God Bless ***

      John Chicoine

———-  If you made it this far  ———   I have one last final cookie.

Of the combined 12 boys last night, only 3 responded to the invitation in any way.   (Surprising.)

BUT! All of those three boys responded with,  “Climbing”.  It was no surprise to me who these three boys were. Their maturity in the Lord is obvious in their lives, and each of these three want to have more of Christ in their lives.       I am so blessed to know each of them, and I look forward to watching them walk out the Christ life.

RR Water Baptism

WE DID IT!  We finally had our water baptism at the lake. The Lord blessed us with best of His creative majesty. What a great time of commitment and testimony for the Adventure and Expedition Rangers. I am absolutely certain it was an experience to remember for the 4 young men that took advantage of this opportunity to commit and or re-commit their walk with Jesus.

Thanks Jaxon for your testimony and performing the baptisms. Way to step up your walk with Jesus.

Next Wednesday night we will be joining the entire outpost at the counsel fire.

—————–

Tonight’s devotional focused on what happens next! It’s not what you might think.

What a great joy of having 4 young men water baptized tonight; each hoping to have a closer and more focused relationship with their lord and savior, Jesus. And what a great testimony before those family and friends that were there to witness it! While it would be a strong temptation to bask in the excitement and joy of that moment; and though I don’t want to diminish the power of that to change a person’s life, I felt compelled to look to the future.

I must admit that personally I find myself driven to change the odds. The truth of the reality that so many of our young people walk away from their faith by their mid 20’s. That here in America we are closing the doors on 10 churches every week. That one in two marriages end in divorce, and the truth that a living Christianity is failing to raise up the moral standard in our society, are of utmost concern. Even more, I can’t erase from my mind the names and faces of so many individuals I have worked with over the years that are no longer walking with Jesus.

My devotional focused not the excitement and joy of the moment, but on what comes next. None of us will stay on the mountaintop all the time. All of us will at some time walk in the darkness of the valley. We must be prepared.

I am so grateful that in the scriptures, God opens the vaults of His heart and lets us see the strengths and the weaknesses of His hero’s. So many times in my own life I have turned to the story of John The Baptist. If there is a Bible hero I can relate to the most it would be him. Not that I would even be worthy to wipe the dust from his sandals. (By the way that’s not what Jesus says.)

I want to call our attention to the words of Christ about John the Baptist.

I tell you the truth, among those born of women, no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is” (Matthew 11:11). Of all the hero’s of the faith, Moses, Abraham, David, Solomon, Elijah, Noah! Jesus said John the Baptist is greater than them all!

John was a man that throughout his life was dedicated to fulfilling the call of God upon His life. The scripture tells us that just at the sound of Mary’s voice (Jesus’s mother) when she came to visit her cousin Elisabeth, that the unborn child jumped in the womb and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Scripture tells us that throughout John’s youth he “continued to grow in the Spirit of God”. John was a man that like no other was the fullness of the Holy Spirit pointing the world to Jesus. His entire life was for just one purpose, one sentence! “ Behold the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world. “ John baptized Jesus and witnessed with his own eyes the Spirit of God coming from heaven and landing on Jesus. He heard with his own ears the voice of God proclaiming Jesus as His son, in whom He was well pleased.

Now I want to take us to another scripture, a place in the darkness of the world, a place of deep distress, and inner turmoil, a lonely and desperate place in the dungeon’s of King Herod where John the Baptist knows he is about to be beheaded for his faith in Jesus. Things are getting real for this great man and he calls from the prison cell one last time to a trusted disciple and out of the depth of his soul, he has to have this one most important question answered:

Matthew 11:2-6

Now when John, while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to Him, “Are You the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?”

How pressed to the limit John must have been?

Brothers and sisters I tell you the truth, if this man had to ask this question, how then could we ever expect that we would not? Do we consider ourselves greater than him? Have we seen more than he? Have we lived our entire life as he had lived just to proclaim these words, “Behold the lamb of God”. I know in my heart as well as I am alive that at some point, each of us will ask of Jesus these very same words; “Are you the one, or should we look for another?”

I know that in this moment of great expectation for what God has done, and what God will do in your lives. At this time when this God is filling your lives with the joy of your salvation, and all you want to do is be baptized and testify of your great faith in Jesus. I know that for those of you that today that just died with Christ under the water and were raised up out of the water in the newness of the Spirit of God that these words are the farthest thing from your minds, but I pray that when the time comes and this excitement fades, that you will remember the story of John the Baptist.

Jesus didn’t rebuke John for his moment of weakness. Jesus didn’t condemn him for desperation and boldness to know for sure. Jesus didn’t reject John for his doubt. NORE WILL HE REJECT YOU. The crowd must have heard the question, they must have begun to murmur, they must have begun to judge John for his doubt, and so they will do the same of you.

I want you to notice that it was after John asked Jesus, “Are you the one?”, that Jesus goes out of His way to address the crowd about John the Baptist, “I tell you the truth, among those born of women, no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist. “

I pray that you will remember the story of John the Baptist; not for the weakness of his flesh, not for the question that he asks, but for the answer that he was given.

Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see, the Blind can see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM. “Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”

Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. His answer to John the Baptist is the same answer He will give you. The evidence of the truth of Jesus is the only answer that is able to keep us and sustain us even unto death. John witnessed the things that he saw, John was filed with the Holy Spirit, and John was the man that was called to baptize Jesus because John the Baptist was true to his calling. He fulfilled his work with complete and total dedication and faithfulness.

We must be about our fathers business. We must test the Spirit of God in faith to fulfill His calling. We can never depend upon these mountain top moments of excitement and joy, to carry us through the valleys. Jesus has to be alive in us and the ongoing evidence of His truth and glory is the only thing we can count on. Emotion has no place in the answers to the questions of our soul.

The blind can still see,

The deaf can still hear,

The lame will still walk,

The dead are still raised up,

And the poor still have the good news preached to them!
